Healthy Lakes Equals a Healthy Economy
Outdoor News >>

One of our area’s most important natural resources is water. Vilas County is one of the wettest counties in Wisconsin because of our geography.  One third of the Vilas County landscape is either open water or wetlands.  To be exact, there are 121,258 acres of wetlands (18.5% of the land base) and 102,276 acres of lakes and streams (15.6% of the land base).  Protecting these water resources is important to our way of life and our economy. All drinking water in Vilas County comes from groundwater. In 2016 visitors spent $212.5 million in Vilas County. Water front property generates 75% of property tax revenues. Second home owners spend $74 per day when visiting.

On Wednesday, October 18, Quita Sheehan, Conservation Specialist at the Vilas County Land and Water Conservation Department along with Pat Goggin, Lakes Specialist and Outreach Program Manager at the University of Wisconsin Extension Lakes will present, to the public, the importance of our lakes and what can be considered on an individual property owner's level to protect our lakes, our economy, and our way of life. A short power point presentation on the economic value of our lakes, a few examples of what can be done to protect and improve our area’s waterbodies via the Healthy Lakes program along with a question and answer session.

Quita Sheehan is a Conservation Specialist with the Vilas County Land and Water Conservation Department.  Since 2010, Quita has been providing technical assistance to the public on water quality protection methods, including the design and installation of shoreland restoration projects.   She works with Land Owners, Lake Organizations, and other groups to take care of the waters, wetlands, and uplands of Vilas County.  By training, Quita is a plant ecologist, and loves to explore and share with others our native plants and eco-systems, native gardening, and how they all work together.

As an outreach manager, Pat Goggin works with lake citizens and organizations, assorted staff from tribal, state and county agencies, and other partners from across the state. Pat received a Master of Science degree in Natural Resources from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point following undergraduate degrees in Environmental Science and History from the University of Wisconsin Madison. Before joining the UW-Extension Lakes team in 2008, Goggin was a county conservationist for the Vilas County Land and Water Department.

The public meeting will be held at the Boulder Junction Community Center on Wednesday, October 18 at 7:00pm and is supported by the Boulder Junction Chamber of Commerce, Boulder Junction Economic Development/Connect Communities Committee and the Town of Boulder Junction. Please join us to learn why it’s economically advantageous to keep our waters healthy.
